Tufi, Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea is only one and half hour flight away from Cairns. Despite the misconception about the lack of safety in the country, it is a beautiful and untouched paradise well worth it to visit!
We had very little time to organise the trip and not much information about the country. That is why we chose to reach a specialised travel operator who could assist in this matter. Luckily enough, we found Best of PNG (www.bestofpng.com). We got in touch with them and Christopher Bartlett, our trip organiser, definitely nailed it! Once we informed him about our preferences and demands, he advised on what type of diving we would find in different locations and suggested the best dive resorts in order to cater our needs.
This travel operator has really good deals with dive resorts and airlines, so at the end, it is worth it to book a holiday package with them, because it is guaranteed that you will not find better prices that the ones they can provide. On top of that, every aspect of our booking was well organised so everything went very smoothly from the first check in, until the last one.
Tufi was the first location chosen for our adventure in PNG. Tufi offers exclusivity as well as clear and calm waters. Among all the dives locations, you can choose if you want to dive the house reef or over 30 open water reef dive sites, all in very close proximity.
The reason why we chose Tufi was because of the possibility to dive with scalloped hammerhead sharks. Fortunately, we encountered them in three occasions during our stay in Tufi. Among them, an encounter with the rare white hammerhead.
The most pristine and colourful coral is in Tufi. There is almost no sign of bleached or dead coral. The marine life is plentiful too. White and black tip sharks, grey reef sharks, uncountable clown fish and anemones, big schools of tropical and colourful fish, octopus, moray eels, barracudas, maori wrasse, and endless species of Nudibranchs.
If you spend a few days in Tufi, the resort also offers other activities such as kayaking or paddle boarding around the beautiful fjords, barbecue on the beach and several cultural activitites to get to know the tribes and little towns around the resort. It is completely safe to walk around the surroundings of the resort, however..make sure you bring mosquito repellent!!
Below you will find a small sample of the beauty of Tufi and its surroundings. Enjoy!
